Let’s be honest — this was not a gentle winter.
Between the January storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow across the area and the February blizzard that followed close behind, your entryway saw more salt, slush, and wet boots than most floors should ever have to handle. Add in months of dry heat from your furnace, temperature swings that made your floorboards expand and contract, and the general abuse that comes with a Pennsylvania winter — and your hardwood floors have earned some attention.
At Majestic Home Renovations, we’ve been installing and refinishing hardwood floors across Montgomery County, Chester County, and the Main Line for years. Every spring, we ask our homeowners to assess their floors and look for things they hadn’t seen all winter. This year, we’re expecting to see more wear than usual. Here’s what to look for — and what to do about it.
Step 1: Start With a Deep Clean — the Right Way
The first instinct most homeowners have is to mop. Resist it. Water is hardwood’s enemy. Even a damp mop can work moisture into the seams between boards over time, causing swelling, warping, and finish damage.
The right approach:
- Dry sweep or vacuum first to remove grit, salt residue, and debris. Use a soft-bristle attachment — not a beater bar, which scratches the finish.
- Use the right cleaner — we recommend Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner or Klean by Mirage applied with a lightly dampened microfiber mop. Never saturate the floor. If you’d like to buy Klean by Mirage floor cleaning products, we always have some on hand!
- Avoid vinegar, dish soap, or steam mops. They feel thorough but strip finish and permanently dull your floors.
Step 2: Do a Damage Assessment
Once clean, do a slow walk-through in good natural light — sunlight coming in at an angle reveals surface issues you’d otherwise miss. Here’s what to look for after a winter like this one:
Salt and grit scratches. Fine scratches concentrated near entryways, mudrooms, and back doors are almost always caused by tracked-in salt and gravel. Light surface scratches in the finish can often be buffed out. Deeper ones that cut into the wood may need spot refinishing.
Gaps between boards. Some seasonal gapping is completely normal — boards contract in dry winter air and expand again in spring. If gaps are still present in May, that’s worth a professional look.
Cupping or crowning. If board edges feel raised (cupping) or the center of boards feels higher than the edges (crowning), you have a moisture issue. Don’t refinish until this is assessed — sanding a cupped or crowned floor can cause permanent damage.
Dullness that won’t clean away. If your floors look flat and tired no matter how much you clean them, the finish has likely worn through in high-traffic areas. The wood itself is now exposed because it’s losing its protective layer.
Step 3: Address Finish Wear
Finish is what protects your hardwood from everything — moisture, scratches, and daily wear. When the finish wears down, the wood itself becomes vulnerable. Signs your finish needs attention:
- Water no longer beads on the surface — it soaks in instead
- The floor looks dull even after cleaning
- You can see bare wood in high-traffic areas like doorways and in front of the sink
A refinish is the right call when wear is widespread or the wood itself is scratched and damaged.
Either way, refinishing is far less expensive than replacing — and a well-refinished floor looks brand new.
Step 4: Protect What You Have
Once your floors are clean and assessed, a few simple habits keep them looking great all year:
- Add felt pads under all furniture legs. Check them every few months — they compress and lose effectiveness over time.
- Use area rugs in high-traffic zones like entryways, hallways, and in front of the kitchen sink. Make sure the rug backing is hardwood-safe (no rubber).
- Control humidity. Hardwood is happiest between 35–55% relative humidity. A whole-home humidifier in winter and air conditioning in summer keeps boards stable.
- No shoes policy. Salt, grit, and gravel tracked in from outside are the number one cause of finish wear. A shoe rack at the entry goes a long way.
When to Call the Pros
Some things are DIY-friendly. Others need a professional eye. Call Majestic if you notice:
- Widespread cupping, crowning, or gapping that doesn’t resolve as weather improves
- Deep scratches or gouges that go through the finish into the wood
- A dull finish that’s lost its protective quality in multiple rooms
- You’re simply not sure — a free assessment costs nothing and gives you peace of mind
