What to Know Before You Finish Your Basement

What Montgomery County requires — so you can plan without surprises.

Egress, Permits & Code

Basement finishing is permitted work. Any basement bedroom must have a code-compliant emergency egress — an egress window with a window well, or a walkout door. Habitable space generally requires a minimum 7-foot ceiling height, and permits and inspections are required, with fees and rules that vary by township. We handle permitting and inspections as part of the project, so the work is done to code and properly signed off — which matters for safety and for your home's value when you eventually sell.

A Finished Basement in Pottsgrove, Montgomery County

From bare lower level to a full entertaining floor — built around a custom wet bar.

This finished lower level in Pottsgrove was designed as a real living floor, not just "finished." The centerpiece is a full custom wet bar — navy glass-front display uppers over soft-grey shaker base cabinets, marble-look quartz counters, a brass gooseneck faucet, an undercounter fridge and dishwasher, and a wraparound peninsula with seating for the whole room. The hardwood flooring ties the lower level to the rest of the home. Basement Remodeling FAQ

How long does a basement remodel take?

Timelines vary by scope, but most basement finishing projects take 4–8 weeks. We keep the process efficient because our in-house team handles every trade. Adding a bathroom or a custom wet bar can add time.

Does my basement need an egress window?

If your plan includes a bedroom, code requires a compliant emergency egress — an egress window with a window well, or a walkout door. For a family room, gym, or bar without a bedroom, an egress window is not always required, but it adds light, safety, and resale appeal. We will tell you exactly what your layout requires.

Can you add a bathroom or a wet bar to my basement?

Yes. We regularly add full and half bathrooms to basements, including plumbing rough-in, custom tile showers, vanities, and flooring, plus custom wet bars with cabinetry and countertops. Because we are a full-service renovation company, the same team handles it all. Note that many townships restrict full kitchens in below-grade space — we will confirm what is allowed for your address.

What flooring works best in a basement?

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is the most popular choice for basements due to its waterproof properties and realistic wood-look aesthetics. We also install tile and engineered hardwood depending on your needs.

Do you handle permits for basement finishing?

Yes. We manage the permitting process and ensure all work meets local building codes for your municipality. Fees and rules vary by township.

Can you work around structural challenges in older homes?

Absolutely. Our team has extensive experience working with the structural quirks of older homes throughout Montgomery County and the Main Line.
